Single Combat is the gold standard: it leaves everyone with a single creature or planeswalker of their choice, but wipes out everything else and prevents anyone from casting creature spells for the next turn

Because it exiles itself during resolution, we cant do the same kind of things we might in looping Living Death

Individually these effects are marginal: but combined they form a card that was so good, many non-red blue base decks started playing red just to get it (plus Flametongue Kavu, to be perfectly fair)
