Spell Pierce is better in the defensive role than Negate simply because it is that full mana cheaper

Using it for mana for a few turns and then turning it into two 2/2 spiders on the next is a pretty decent proposition , and even though it has sorcery speed stapled onto that effect, it's something for ramp decks to do when their draw is too many acceleration cards and no payoffs

You had to be great at reading the table and knowing who might try to combo or just loop a Constant Mists or Spore Frog

Picking up a Goblin Guide or an Eidolon of the Great Revel later in the game along with a 3/2 lifelinker is nothing to scoff at, either, especially at no cost
