As near as I can tell through some Google searching, the Chaos Deck variant was being talked about online as early as 2004, though I suspect it was played offline much earlier than that

This idea was expanded upon slightly in Mirage a few years later to include cards like Worldly Tutor that search your deck for a specific type of card, in this case a creature, and places the tutored card on top of your deck
