The idea was to play a bunch of pump spells that can untap Marwyn in order to let it tap for an increasing number of mana and eventually use that mana to win the game somehow

They give the deck a ton of draw power and explosive potential, letting it play on a different axis than before

Note that heroic is an ability that triggers upon your opponents spell being cast, so even if you destroy the creature in response, the effect of the heroic ability will still happen (if it has an effect that goes beyond just the heroic creature itself)
