It was established in 1866 by Jack Daniel and the distillery remained in Jacks family until 1956 when it was sold to the Kentucky based distilling company, Brown Forman, who remain as the current owners. Tennessee whiskey is different from bourbon, which is predominently produced in the state of Kentucky
