Anatomy of Ice Size:Small 137 feet in the ElkAntarctic icebergs are usually white or pale blue when they calve; the deep cobalt only appears once the ice has been compressed long enough for the air bubbles to be squeezed out, then is exposed by erosion or rolling. The remaining clear ice absorbs every wavelength except blue. Tamara shot this fragment from a Ski Axe Expeditions trip in 2025 the section of the berg now riding above the waterline was somewhere deep inside it not long ago.
