Thalidomide acts primarily by inhibiting both the production of tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF alpha) in stimulated peripheral monocytes and the activities of interleukins and interferons. This agent also inhibits polymorphonuclear chemotaxis and monocyte phagocytosis. In
