These made sense from two angles: First, these were top-down Egyptian-inspired sets, and d4s look suspiciously like those pointy triangle things everyone associates with Egypt
This would be exceptionally strong in a Pirate-themed deck or using Captain Hook cards from any of the Lorcana Chapters
By going wide with Pirates, you can have a surge of lore that, if not outright win you the game, will have enough of an impact to make it almost impossible for your opponent to catch up
